- On Montanas and Cougars, run every slide fully out and in and listen for grinding — slide motors and gear racks are the most common expensive repair on multi-slide fifth wheels
- Ask for the four-season package (Montana) or the winter-rated tanks if you plan to camp below freezing; the badge alone does not guarantee heated underbellies
- Look at the front cap and gel-coat for chalking and cracking on trailers that lived outdoors in the Sun Belt
- Weigh the tow: a loaded Cougar fifth wheel is realistically a three-quarter-ton job regardless of the half-ton marketing
