How an RV appraisal works
An RV appraisal is an estimate of what a specific motorhome or trailer would sell for today, built from evidence rather than the asking price the owner has in mind. There are three ways to get one, and they answer slightly different questions.
Comparable listings (what this page does)
The same method a dealer's used-RV manager uses: find rigs of the same make, model and model year that are for sale or recently sold, adjust for mileage, floorplan, condition and options, and land on a range. Our estimator runs that comparison against the live inventory on this site plus a web search for the same RV elsewhere, so the range moves with the market instead of with a printed guide.
Price guides (J.D. Power, formerly NADA)
Lenders, insurers and most dealers start from the J.D. Power RV guide. It is built from dealer-reported sales and lags the market by months, it treats every unit of a model year the same, and it is weak on regional differences and on what a specific floorplan is worth. Useful as a floor and a ceiling; rarely the number an RV actually trades at.
Professional inspection and written appraisal
A certified RV inspector goes through the coach or trailer in person — roof and seals, moisture readings in walls and floors, slide-outs, appliances, chassis and tires on a motorhome — and a written appraisal states a value. A full inspection on a mid-size rig usually runs a few hundred dollars, and a formal written appraisal is what banks, insurers, courts and the IRS accept. An online estimate is where you start; the inspection is what closes a loan or a claim.
What to have ready
Make and model are enough for a first number. Each item below narrows the range, and all of them are what an inspector or buyer will ask for anyway.
- VIN
- The 17-character number on the driver's door jamb or dash of a motorhome, or on the tongue or roadside front corner of a trailer. It confirms the builder and model year, which is what every comparable is matched on.
- Mileage and engine (motorhomes)
- Chassis mileage from the odometer, engine and transmission, and generator hours. On a diesel pusher the engine hours matter as much as the miles.
- Floorplan and length
- Bunkhouse, rear living, front kitchen; slide count; overall length. Two units of the same model year and brand can differ by a quarter in price on floorplan alone.
- Condition, honestly graded
- Roof membrane and seals, delamination or soft spots in walls and floors, slide seals, tires by date code, awnings. Cosmetic wear costs a little; water damage costs a lot.
- Options and upgrades
- Solar and lithium, a second air conditioner, a washer-dryer prep, a hitch or tow package, upgraded suspension. Each moves the number when it works and the buyer wanted it.
- Service and storage history
- Roof resealing, bearing packs, generator service, whether it lived covered or outside. A folder of receipts is worth real money to the next owner and to an inspector.

Asking prices, not sale prices. A private sale of an ordinary example usually closes below the median; a low-mileage, covered-stored unit with records sits above it. Brand pages on the site break each of these down by model.
When an online estimate is not enough
The range on this page is what you need to price a listing, judge an offer or decide whether to trade in. Four situations call for a written appraisal from a certified RV inspector or accredited appraiser.
- Insurance. Agreed-value policies and total-loss claims on older or higher-value RVs usually require a written appraisal; the payout is capped at that figure.
- RV loans. Lenders want a guide value or an appraisal on used RVs above a threshold and on anything older than roughly ten to fifteen years, and many will not finance past a set age at all.
- Donation to a charity. A written appraisal by a qualified appraiser is required for a tax deduction above $5,000, and the RV's fair market value is what you can claim.
- Estates, divorce and disputes. A neutral written value stands up where an online range or a dealer's offer will not.
Frequently asked questions
Is the RV appraisal really free?
Yes. Enter the RV and you get the range on the page, no account and no card. US RV Connection earns from optional listing boosts and dealer subscriptions, not from appraisals.
How accurate is an online RV appraisal?
For a common production RV with typical mileage and honest condition, the range is usually within about ten percent of where the unit sells privately. It is least reliable for rare or custom builds, units with water damage or major repairs, and RVs over roughly 20 years old, where an inspection matters more than the comparables.
What is the difference between an RV appraisal and an RV inspection?
An appraisal answers what the RV is worth; an inspection answers what condition it is in, and an inspector's report often includes a value. Online appraisals and dealer opinions are free and fast; an inspection is an in-person examination you pay for and the only one a bank, insurer or court accepts.
Do dealers and private sellers get the same number?
The estimator returns a private-sale range. Dealers list higher because their price includes reconditioning, a warranty and a trade-in margin. If you are trading in, expect an offer 15 to 30 percent under the private range; our trade-in guide explains why.
Does the appraisal account for mileage and floorplan?
Tell the estimator both. Mileage is part of the comparable match on motorhomes; floorplan and slide count move the range on every type, and a bunkhouse or rear-living layout can sit well above the model median.
How is this different from the NADA (J.D. Power) RV value?
The J.D. Power guide is built from dealer-reported sales months old and treats every unit of a model year alike. This page uses asking prices for the same RV on the market right now, then you can check the guide as a second opinion. Lenders will usually quote the guide figure.
