Winnebago vs Thor Motor Coach: Quality, Value and Which to Buy Used
Winnebago and Thor Motor Coach build most of the motorhomes you will see on a dealer lot. They approach the market differently, and that difference shows up in the used price.

Shoppers comparing a used Class C or Class A often end up with one Winnebago and one Thor Motor Coach on the shortlist at similar prices. The two companies are the two largest motorhome builders in the country, and both sell everything from compact Class B vans to diesel pushers. They are not the same, though. One sells on reputation and a long history; the other sells on floorplan variety, features per dollar and sheer volume. This guide lays out the differences that matter to a used buyer.
Who they are
| Winnebago | Thor Motor Coach | |
|---|---|---|
| Parent company | Winnebago Industries, which also owns Grand Design, Newmar and Chris-Craft | Thor Industries, which also owns Airstream, Jayco, Keystone, Heartland, Dutchmen, CrossRoads and others |
| Home base | Forest City, Iowa, since the 1950s, plus plants in Indiana and Oregon | Elkhart, Indiana |
| Scale | Large | The largest motorhome builder in North America by volume |
| Class A | Vista, Adventurer, Forza and others; Newmar covers the luxury end within the parent company | ACE, Hurricane, Windsport, Palazzo, Aria, Venetian and more |
| Class C | Minnie Winnie, View, Navion, EKKO | Four Winds, Chateau, Quantum, Omni, Magnitude |
| Class B | Travato, Solis, Revel, Era | Sequence, Tellaro, Scope, Sanctuary |
How they differ in practice
- Construction and reputation. Winnebago built its name on the strength of its body construction and a long factory-support record. Owners tend to cite build consistency as the reason they paid more.
- Variety and features. Thor Motor Coach offers more floorplans across more price points and often more features at a given price, which is why it sells so many units.
- Warranty and service experience. Both have dealer networks nationwide. Owner reports on both brands cluster around dealer quality rather than the factory; the dealer you buy from matters as much as the badge.
- Resale. Winnebago units generally hold a stronger position on the used market, which cuts both ways: more to pay going in, more to get back later.
Do not compare brand to brand. Compare the specific chassis, year and floorplan. A Thor Class C on a Ford chassis and a Winnebago Class C on the same chassis share the engine, transmission and most of the drivetrain; the differences are in the house, not the vehicle.
What to inspect on either brand
- Chassis service history: oil, transmission, brakes and generator hours. The house can look perfect on a motorhome with a neglected drivetrain.
- Roof, seams and slide seals. Water intrusion is the most expensive problem on any motorhome and both brands depend on maintained sealant.
- Cab-over bunk on a Class C. Press the mattress platform and check the front cap seams; this is the classic leak point on both brands.
- Tires. Motorhome tires age out before they wear out. Read the date codes.
- Every system on shore power, generator and battery: air conditioning, furnace, water heater, refrigerator, slides, leveling jacks and the inverter.

Which to buy
Buy the Winnebago if long-term ownership and resale matter and you can find the floorplan you want in its narrower lineup. Buy the Thor Motor Coach if the floorplan and the price at purchase matter most and you have a dealer you trust for service. In both cases buy the specific unit on its inspection, not the brand on its reputation.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Winnebago better than Thor?
- Winnebago is generally regarded as the more consistently built of the two and holds its value better. Thor Motor Coach offers more floorplans and features per dollar. The right answer depends on the specific unit, the dealer and how long you plan to keep it.
- Does Thor own Winnebago?
- No. They are separate public companies. Thor Industries owns Thor Motor Coach, Airstream, Jayco and many towable brands. Winnebago Industries owns Winnebago, Grand Design and Newmar.
- Which holds its value better, Winnebago or Thor?
- Winnebago, in general. The live brand medians on this page show where each sits on today's used market.
- Are Thor and Winnebago Class C motorhomes built on the same chassis?
- Often, yes. Both build Class C units on Ford and Mercedes-Benz chassis among others, so the drivetrain comparison is usually between chassis, not brands.
- What is the most common problem with used motorhomes?
- Water intrusion through roof seams, slide seals and the cab-over cap. Inspect for it on either brand before anything else.
- Which Winnebago is the entry-level Class C?
- The Minnie Winnie has long been Winnebago's mainstream Class C. The View and Navion are the Mercedes-based step up.
- Which Thor Class C is most common used?
- Four Winds and Chateau, which are closely related lines sold through different dealer channels.
- Should I buy a motorhome from a private seller or a dealer?
- Either, with an independent inspection. A private sale usually costs less; a dealer can offer a short warranty and handles the paperwork.
